Capture Better Audio With Your Phone

Bad audio is the kiss of death in video marketing. You can have the coolest visuals and the best content, but if your audio is bad people tune out. Unlike video, there is no zoom function on a microphone (and anyone who says otherwise is lying.) The best way to get better sound is to move your microphone closer to the source. This video gives a quick fix using a device you probably already have in your pocket.

Normally, I recommend purchasing an inexpensive wired lavaliere microphone and plugging it into your camera. The quality of your sound will go up dramatically, but you’ll have to spend about $30 US to get the job done. You can also connect the microphone to your smartphone instead of the cheap (low quality) hands-free option shown in the video.

Another audio recording solution I recommend is to get a Zoom H1 audio recorder and place it just above or below your speaker similar to how the phone is positioned in this video. The stereo microphones built into this unit are very good. You can connect a wired lavaliere to the Zoom and disconnect your talent from the camera. Put the recorder in a pocket and you have complete freedom of movement With this setup, you follow the same basic process demonstrated in the video to sync things up in post.

Whether you invest in a little extra gear or use the phone already in your pocket, more your microphone closer to your subject and radically improve the audio on your next marketing video.
